The Catacombs are an area in Deeptower.

The Catacombs are the tutorial area in Deeptower. In the game’s fiction, this is the old worksite where laborers and members of the Society lived while Deeptower was built.

To progress past the first room, you have to equip your sword and swing it at the vines.

Various key mechanics are introduced here, such as:

  • Swinging your weapon (pickupable in the Memorial Chamber)
  • Breakable structures (Vines, Walls)
  • Secret rooms1
  • Combat
  • Interacting with objects
  • Shovel (pickupable in King’s Landing)

Sub‑Areas

Catacomb Torch Puzzle

To progress past the second room, pull this torch-lever in the Barrows.

The Catacombs contain several sub‑areas:

  • The Barrows
  • Deeptower Landing
  • The Great Cavern - King’s Landing2

  • Memorial Chamber

  1. Setting aside the fact that torches in enclosed spaces is a terrible idea, I remember Deeptower’s Game Manual (lost to time) rather brazenly stating that the torches hid many secrets. Although there are a few hidden rooms that are revealed by pulling torch-levers, the abundance of lit torches in this “abandoned” hole makes it rather inadvisable to audit every lighting fixture in the dungeon. So don’t bother. Anyways, you can see on the map that there’s a secret torch-lever early on and a breakable wall in the last room of the Barrows. 

  2. DO NOT JUMP OUT OF THE MINECART. The bottom of the pit is not deep enough to trigger the out-of-bounds respawn. You will be softlocked.
