Society of Crossed Beams

The Society of Crossed Beams was a guild established early in Deeptower’s history. It organized and managed the excavators, engineers, and low-level earth wizards who accomplished the unbelievable feat of subterranean engineering.

Overview

When Heraldius I first commissioned the nascent Stone Council, the wizards reluctantly realized that their magical prowess would not be enough to build and maintain the proposed plans for an underground city. By royal decree, thousands of workers were brought into Deeptower, tasked with laying stone, digging tunnels, and installing ventilation systems.1

Non-wizard engineers also flocked to the project. The wizards were very helpful in teleporting the tonnes of displaced earth and stone outside (creating Keeper’s Hill, significantly speeding up the excavation process.

The workers, who were admittedly dying from poor ventilation, lack of proper equipment, and exhaustion, formed the Society of Crossed Beams to ask for better working conditions. Unrealistically,2 Heraldius I capitulated to their demands. Later on, the engineers and wizards also joined their ranks as they gained power.

  1. Deeptower frames this as being an “equal opportunity workplace” as one of the flavor text notes suggests that the worker writing it is female. This isn’t realistic especially since this is a medieval setting when the female sex were homemakers and childbearers.

  2. The wizards could simply kill any dissenter. I don’t see how this “society” could form in the first place.
