Heraldian Dynasty¶
The Heraldian Dynasty was the ruling family of Deeptower. Important members include:
- Heraldius I: Born James Herald, a.k.a. King James. He was an incredibly wealthy noble who was nonetheless disconnected from royalty as none wanted to marry into his family. Determined to become royalty by any means necessary, he used his vast coffers to commission the Stone Council to build an underground city, impregnable to attacks and away from those who sought to keep him firmly in his noble status. He died before the city, named Deeptower, was finished.1
- Heraldius III: Birth name unknown. The first king to be born inside Deeptower. Notable for vastly expanding the Wizarding Ring in order to please the increasingly uncooperative wizards.
- Heraldius X: Heraldius X, the Mad, who had seen multiple invasion attempts into the city from surrounding kingdoms fail miserably, believed that Deeptower would never fall. He had a wizard summon a dragon right in the center of the city to prove its defensive capabilities, only for the dragon to easily kidnap Princess Glissandra (a toddler at the time) and make roost at the bottom of the tower.
- Princess Glissandra: Daughter of Heraldius X. The girl you’re rescuing in Deeptower. She’s over 30 according to in-game dates, so really too old to be a “princess”.
- Regent Arten: Only a Heraldian by marriage. After Heraldius X was forcibly deposed, his wife Arten became Regent and attempted to negotiate with the dragon to recover Princess Glissandra. When negotiations fell through, she retreated, claiming that she would find a champion elsewhere. The peasantry followed her. Due to her cowardice, the nobles that remained starved or were killed by the dragon.

An unused model named heraldiusI.obj sits in Deeptower’s code. For some reason, each level's game manager is tied to a model of heraldiusI.obj. All of a level's architecture (or some other tech word) is built on top of this model. ↩
