Grand Staircase¶
The Grand Staircase was an area in Deeptower.
Overview¶
The Grand Staircase was the central architectural feature of the Deeptower: a massive spiral staircase that descended through the entire heights of the city, connecting each of its levels. It was commissioned by Heraldius I, intended to be the civic backbone of the underground city. Citizens would gather along the railings to look downward, a popular past-time and a reminder that the city extended endlessly below them.
Following the events put into motion by Heraldius X, the bottom of Deeptower became the dragon's roost.1

The Grand Staircase was cut from the final game. It was intended to physically connect each level, so that when you finished a floor you would emerge into the staircase, descent a flight, and enter the next. You would always be moving downward. That sense of descent was the whole point. Without it, Deeptower is just a series of disconnected rooms with loading screens between them. You lose the geography of the game being an inverted tower entirely. ↩
